I am happy to announce that we have added some hand-woven and hand-painted Bogolan scarfs to our accessories' shopping site.

These have been woven in Mali using 100% malien cotton. Then artists from central Mali have painted these in the traditional fashion: By hand und using only natural colors! First, they area dipped to apply the background color and then the patterns are applied using brushes and stencils. While most patterns have a historical origin and a meaning, they are each time interpreted and combined differently by the artists thus creating unique pieces with a unique story.
The colors are made from plants (e.g. the famous blue indigo), earth (e.g. brown and grey clay), roots (usually reddish tones) and tree bark (mainly yellowish and ocre tones). The process of extracting the color varies but always includes several steps, some taking weeks.
Sometimes you will find some stains and impurities on the reverse. However, this is proof of the hand-making process and also of the conditions these pieces are fabricated under. We believe, this adds charm and individuality!
